Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP)) leader and former Barrackpore Lok Sabha MP Arjun Singh has received police summons for violence outside his house. He has decided to move court before answering the summons.
Five rounds were fired outside Meghna Jute Mill in Bhatpara, two rounds near Mr. Arjun Singh’s house, and two bombs were thrown at his house. Mr. Singh alleged that all of this happened while the police stood by. One Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker was injured in the clashes.
The incident occurred on Wednesday (March 26, 2025) night which led Jagaddal police to summon Mr. Arjun Singh. After he did not show up for questioning on Thursday (March 27, 2025), police reached his residence.
In relation to the police summons, Mr. Arjun Singh has asked for an urgent hearing at the Calcutta High Court. Justice Tirthankar Ghosh has allowed the case to be heard.
The BJP leader accused local TMC councillor Sunita Singh’s son, Namit Singh, of being responsible for the firing, but TMC has refuted all claims. The TMC also countered the claims, alleging that Mr. Arjun Singh opened fire on Mr. Namit Singh.
TMC MLA from Jaggadal, Somnath Shyam, said, “There is footage of Arjun Singh attacking people. He has himself used arms to fire shots at people. A man named Saddam was injured in the firing.”
Police have started an investigation into the matter. The TMC said the incident started with a minor scuffle between factory workers. They accused Arjun Singh and his men of escalating the situation.
“Times are not so bad that I will have to open fire myself. If it was just clashes between groups, then why did they hurl bombs at my house and fire shots near my house?” Mr. Arjun Singh alleged. He added that if violence erupts in front of his house, he will not stay silent.
Mr. Arjun Singh denied any involvement in the violence, stating that multiple cameras on the road could provide evidence of the incident.
The BJP leader has also said that this is the second incident within six months where bombs were hurled outside his home.
