RAIGANJ: CM Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday stepped up the poll heat on BJP, questioning the party on its attempts to impose restrictions on the food people eat and the clothes they wear.
With an eye on BJP’s presence in the districts of north Bengal, the CM said: “We never interfere with the food habits or clothes of an individual. But what is BJP doing? People are not allowed to consume eggs. They can’t have mutton or fish in the states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan or Gujarat. The shops are being bulldozed.”
Bracketing Congress with the opposition camp in the state, Banerjee said: “It is TMC that is fighting for the rights of the people of the state. We all have to unite to defeat the Congress-CPM-BJP nexus in Bengal.”
The CM also came down heavily on the BJP government for trying to introduce Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and National Register of Citizens (NRC). “They (BJP) are speaking about NRC, CAA and Uniform Civil Code ahead of the elections. This is nothing but politics. We have given citizenship to everyone (and) they (people in border areas) are getting everything. They are citizens, which is why they are allowed to vote,” she said.
“But let me make very clear that as long as I am alive, I will not allow NRC implementation in Bengal. I will not allow them to take away the citizenship of anyone… everyone here is a citizen,” Banerjee asserted.
The CM, while upholding Mahatma Gandhi’s “unity in diversity” principle on his death anniversary, said that the state government had recognized Rajbanshi schools and those run in Sadri language in Alipurduar.
During speeches at events in north Bengal, the CM said the Modi government would have only ‘maine dewar’ Budget (vote on accounts) and not a full-fledged Budget in the election year. Banerjee said the new government would table the full-fledged Budget after the Lok Sabha elections, dropping hints that the new government would be a different one.
“They (Modi government) won’t have a Budget this time. We will have it. They will place a vote on accounts ahead of the elections. But you will see them making false promises. They will say that they will give you rice, money on various accounts. They will go after the vote. We will stay and give you everything. It has already started,” she said.
Banerjee told women who had attained the age of 60 not to worry about Lakshmir Bhandar. “Your names will be automatically transferred into the old age pension scheme. You won’t have to apply afresh,” she said. The CM also assured tea garden workers of land pattas.
