The Bharatiya Janata Party will win 12 of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam where there is huge support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development-oriented politics, union home minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah told News18 in an exclusive conversation on Tuesday during a visit to the state.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP won nine seats and got a 36.05% vote share in the state. The Congress could manage only three, with a vote share of 35.44%. The other two seats were distributed among Badruddin Ajmal’s All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and an independent candidate.

The BJP will put up a strong performance in the Northeast with the support of its partners from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Shah said. The saffron party will improve its position in the Northeast this time compared to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, he added.

Issues like border disputes and terrorism have been largely resolved while land and air connectivity has improved a lot in the region, said Shah.
