A Buckingham Palace King’s guard in a hilarious viral video was seen slipping and falling while on duty, quickly getting back up and pretending nothing had happened. Anthony Smith, a radiographer from Liverpool, England, recorded the embarrassing moment when the guard landed on his backside.
Smith said he was just filming randomly when the guard slipped right over.He also watched the video back to believe it, according to the radiographer.
The footage shows the guard, dressed in a tall bearskin hat and red tunic, walking at attention until he loses his footing and falls. Spectators can be heard laughing in the background.
Guard’s swift recovery
The King’s guard quickly recovered, adjusting his hat and uniform and repositioning his rifle before resuming his position, according to Smith.
The incident amused many, as the Palace guards are known for their stoic demeanor despite numerous attempts by tourists to break their composure.
Training and protocols
According to the British army, the highly trained guards are prepared for various situations and must pass rigorous physical assessments. Some of the unspoken rules include that guards cannot be touched without permission, must not smile or move freely while on duty, and are required to march periodically to prevent fainting. If a guard does faint, he must do so while remaining at attention, according to media reports.
King’s guards earn a starting salary of around $33,000, with benefits including subsidised meals, free health and dental care, and low-cost accommodation, according to media reports.
