KOZHIKODE: A couple of CCTV visuals of the devastating landslides which have obliterated most parts of the villages of Mudakkai and Chooralmala in Wayanad surfaced on Sunday, on the 20th day of the disaster, reaffirming the intensity of the calamity which was recounted by the survivors who escaped that fateful night on July 30.
The video footage from the cameras installed at a stationery shop and in front of a bakery at Chooralmala and at the Mundakkai mosque show water and rubble flow from the landslides gushing into the buildings leading to the collapse of the walls and heavy rains lashing the Mundakkai region.
The stock inside the shop, including cupboards, is seen getting washed away due to the force of the gushing waters.
Some of the visuals also has images of animals being impacted and also that of a person rescuing a bird trapped in the slush which was filled up inside the shop.
Though many buildings had CCTV, not many visuals of the devastation had emerged as most structures in the epicentre areas of Punchirimattom and Mundakkai were washed away.
While the CCTV footage from the two shops at Chooralmala were aired by a Malayalam news channel, the video footage from the Mundakkai mosque were released by the PRD department.
The footage from Mundakkai mosque, which was destroyed in the landslide at 1.44pm on the fateful night, shows heavy rains lashing the area.
Meanwhile, the district administration has published a draft list of 119 missing persons in the Mundakkai landslide along with their photographs. However, officials said that the list of missing persons is not final.
The forest department has deployed staff to prevent unauthorized entry of people into the disaster-hit areas of Mundakkai and Chooralmala.
Forest staff along with the police would strengthen surveillance in the areas during the night. South Wayanad DFO Ajith K Raman said that staff have also been deployed to prevent people from unnecessarily entering areas around Soochipara.
