CHENNAI: The second spell of intense rainfall on Friday night pushed rain records in Nungambakkam observatory to 11cm since July 1, which is more than the monthly average of 10cm.
IMD has forecast more thunderstorms and rainfall of light to moderate intensity for the next two days.
The widespread rainfall on Friday night left 5cm in Nungambakkam and 4cm in Meenambakkam observatories.Core areas such as Teynampet, Anna Nagar and Valasaravakkam recorded 6cm rainfall, Ennore, Thiruvottiyur, Mugalivakkam and MGR Nagar recorded 5cm. The heavy rainfall also left patches of clouds that loomed over many parts of the city. Since the clouds were higher in altitude, they did not bring rainfall and instead brought the day temperature down on Saturday. Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 30.3C and 30C, around 5.7C and 6.1C below normal.
“For the next 48 hours, the city and the suburbs may receive light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over some areas during evening/night. Maximum temperature may be around 34C-35C and minimum temperature is likely to be 27C-28C. The skies may be partly cloudy,” an IMD bulletin said.
Meteorologists said the rainfall was due to convection triggered by weak westerlies, seabreeze and the heat from high day temperature on land. Intense thunderstorms since June have left 34cm and 35cm in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam observatories, which are 25cm excess in both stations. Bloggers said the city has chances for late evening rain spells till next midweek.
