TUMAKURU: A choreographer-turned-chain-snatcher who had literlly slipped out of Gubbi Town police station by managing to slide his hands out of handcuffs on Friday morning and was on his way to meet his girlfriend in Mumbai, attempted to give cops pursuing him the slip in vain in Tumakuru railway station on Saturday night.
Syed Ali Balasaheb Nadaf alias Harshavardhan, who was inside the general compartment of a Belagavi-bound train that had stopped in Tumakuru briefly, saw civil police boarding his compartment and scanning the travellers. Certain they were searching for him, he jumped out of the compartment and sought to sneak into an AC coach.
“Yei, general compartment ge hogu…(Hey, go to the general compartment),” a ticket collector shouted at him, drawing the civil cops’ attention. Nadaf sought to rush out of the station but cops managed to catch him.
Arrested for allegedly snatching the gold chain of a woman in Gubbi on January 11 evening with his associate, Nadaf, a resident of JP Nager, Bengaluru, had escaped from the Gubbi Town station by sliding his hands out of the handcuffs around 3.30 am of Friday.
Walked on train track
Nadaf walked along the railway tracks passing near the station as he was sure there would be no CCTV cameras along the train corridors and reached Tumakuru railway station. He got a truck driver to drop him at Kunigal, where he visited a dhaba and got its owner to lend him Rs 500 after coming up with sob story that his two wheeler had broke down and he had to reach Bengaluru.
Boarding a private bus, Nadaf reached Kalasipalya by Saturday morning. There, he purchased a ‘second hand key-pad’ mobile phone for Rs 200. As his mobile phone had been confiscated by Gubbi Town police, he produced his Aadhaar number and got a duplicate SIM card.
“Once his duplicate SIM card number was activated, we got a lead to follow. He contacted a couple of friends to borrow Rs 2000 from them. By the time we reached them, Nadaf had collected Rs 2,000 from one of them and left. Soon we learnt that he was on his way to Mumbai to meet his girlfriend,” an investigating officer said.
Quickly, cops were rushed to all possible routes Nadaf could take: Kempegowda International Airport, Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna railway station, Kalasipalya private bus stand and KSRTC bus terminal. One team was deployed at Tumakuru railway station as a back-up in case Nadaf decided to take mulitple trains to reach Mumbai.
“Hadn’t Nadaf jumped out of the general compartment, we would have missed him, at least for that night,” police said.
Five cops suspended
Meanwhile, five cops including a police sub inspector, three head constables and a police constable from Gubbi Town police station were suspended for their alleged negligent behaviour that helped Nadaf from escaping.
