NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Tuesday asked Uttar Pradesh government to clean the wuzu water tank, which was sealed on SC orders after purported discovery of a huge Shivling during a court-mandated survey in May 2022, under the supervision of the Varanasi district magistrate.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud accepted the tank cleaning plea of Hindu plaintiffs, who have filed a suit seeking right to worship of gods and goddesses inside Gyanvapi mosque believed to be built in the 17th century on the original Kashi Vishwanath temple after partially demolishing it, after the mosque management committee supported it.
Appearing for the Hindu side, senior advocate Madhavi Divan said the wuzu tank was unused and not cleaned since May 16, 2022, after the discovery of the said Shivling and was emitting a foul smell because of dead and rotten fishes inside the tank. The mosque management committee, through senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, said that a similar plea by the Muslim side is currently pending before a Varanasi court.
The bench directed the state authorities to undertake the cleaning task under the supervision of the district magistrate. After the discovery of the Shivling, the trial court had ordered sealing of the wuzu area on May 16, 2022 and the order was confirmed by Supreme Court a day later.
