HYDERABAD: Yet another Indian student in the US, Uma Satya Sai Gadde, has died in mysterious circumstances in Cleveland, Ohio, causing widespread apprehensions among the community.
Gadde, a Telugu, was pursuing higher studies in a college in Cleveland. Officials, however, refused to divulge further details.
India’s consulate general in New York said in a post on X on Friday that a police investigation in the case was underway, and added that it was in touch with the student’s family, but did not mention how he died and under what circumstances.The consulate is trying to get Gadde’s mortal remains transported to India at the earliest.
There have been a spate of incidents involving Indian-origin students in the US since the beginning of this year. The Global Hindu Heritage Foundation (GHHF), which has moved a petition seeking an independent FBI investigation into the deaths, provided a list of 12 Indian students who had died in the US. The consulate general in New York said there were more than 175 responses from people, expressing concern over the alarming deaths of Indian community members.
A respondent K Guru, however, put the toll at 14, giving out the list of names – Amarnath Ghosh, Sameer Kamath, Shreyas Reddy, Neel Acharya, Atul Dhawan, Vivek Saini, G Dinesh, Nikesh, Aaditya Adlakha, Varun Raj Pucha, Saiesh Veera, Varun Manish Chheda and Abhijit Paruchuri. “The 14th name is Gadde,” he said. The deaths have been attributed to various reasons, including murders, suspicious deaths, accidents and other reasons.
GHHF has launched an online petition calling for the safety of Indian students in the US, and has so far received 5,895 signatures. “The safety of Indian students studying abroad has become a pressing concern that demands immediate action,” GHHF said.
