Congress leader Thangkabalu to receive Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Award

The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday (January 7, 2025) named Congress leader and former Union Minister K.V. Thangkabalu for receiving the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Award for 2024. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin would present the award on Tiruvalluvar day celebrations scheduled on January 15.

An official release said that the State government has chosen Mr. Thangkabalu, who has been in public life for over 50 years and has held various positions in the Congress, including as AICC member, chief of the party’s young wing, and senior positions of the TNCC, Union Minister of State.

The former TNCC president has also been a Rajya Sabha MP once and was elected to the Lok Sabha twice, it said. The Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Award was instituted in 2006 by the Tamil Nadu government to honour personalities serving the society in the ideals led by former CM K. Kamaraj.

The award includes a prize of ₹2 lakh, a gold medal, a citation and a shawl. A total of 18 leaders have received the award since its inception.
