A protest was held in the city on Thursday condemning Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his remarks on B.R. Ambedkar, saying that it has become a fashion for the Congress to chant the name of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
It was led by former MLA M.K. Somashekar who said that the BJP leaders had insulted not only the architect of the Indian constitution but also crores of his followers through such “disparaging remarks”.
Mr. Somashekar said Mr. Shah’s statement betrayed the BJP’s actual mindset not only towards Ambedkar but also towards the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes in the country. Due to the Constitution bequeathed by Dr. Ambedkar, people including Amit Shah are availing the benefits of reservation, and disparaging him indicates their low mindset.
The Union Minister’s statement is not surprising given the ideology of the BJP, said Mr. Somashekar. The people of the country will admonish them for such slanderous remarks. He also flayed the BJP MPs who thumped the table supporting Mr. Shah’s remarks. The former MLA said that if not for Dr. Ambedkar, millions of people would have been in the grip of “manuvadis”, deprived of dignity and rights.
Mr. Somashekar also urged President Droupadi Murmu to intervene and advise Prime Minister Narendra Modi to drop Mr. Shah from the Cabinet.
The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) spokesperson H.A. Venkatesh, former mayors Narayan, T.B. Chikkanna, and other Congress leaders were present.
