The Consumer Protection Welfare Association of Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Tiruvarur districts has urged the authorities concerned to demolish and reconstruct the Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) located on Marundhu Kothalam Road in Nagapattinam town.

The UPHC was shifted two years ago to the Health and Wellness Centre on Pazha Street in Ward 30 of Nagapattinam following severe structural damage to the building. However, the temporary facility is situated on a narrow congested street that is difficult to access.

Although ₹1.2 crore was sanctioned under the National Health Mission for demolition and construction of a new facility at the original site, the work is yet to begin. The association said that officials had said that the new building would come up at the same location but there had been no visible progress.

Association president N.P. Bhaskaran said repeated representations had been made to the district administration and municipal authorities, but action had not been taken so far. Official sources said the demolition and reconstruction work would be taken up shortly.
