NEW DELHI: Govt will come out with a new national cooperative policy within a month, said Union home and cooperation minister Amit Shah on the occasion of 102nd International Day of Cooperatives on Saturday. The new policy, replacing the existing one formulated in 2002, will seek to further strengthen the cooperative movement in the country by deepening its reach to the grassroots.
Underlining growing footprints of cooperatives in India ever since the new ministry of cooperation came into existence on the same day three years ago, Shah expressed his confidence that there will not be a single panchayat in which there will not be a primary agricultural credit society (PACS) on the day when International Day of Cooperatives will be celebrated five years later in 2029.
Shah said that in the next five years a strong foundation of cooperation will be laid so that it impacts every village and household for the next 125 years.
At present, there are 65,000 functional PACS, out of which 48,000 have taken initiatives towards becoming viable by adding some new activity to their work/service profile. Under the 2029 target, PACS will be created in two lakh more panchayats.
Shah was addressing the ‘Sahkar Se Samriddhi’ (prosperity through cooperation) conference in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The country at present has more than 8.5 lakh cooperative societies with a member base of nearly 30 crore. The cooperatives are engaged in varied activities like dairying, fisheries, agro-processing, credit, housing, weaving and marketing.
Shah said his ministry has taken many important steps for the cooperative sector and govt has set a target that there should not be any state or district in which there is not a viable district cooperative bank and a viable district milk producer union.
