Preeti, widow of deceased Dalit prisoner Aakash Kumar, recounted the harrowing events that led to her husband’s death, claiming she received a phone call soon after cops detained Aakash, demanding Rs 50,000 to free him. As she was arranging the money, news of his death reached her. On Friday morning, two plainclothes policemen arrived at Aakash’s home and obtained his father’s signature on a blank piece of paper.Only then did they inform the family of Aakash’s death. “They threatened us to cremate the body early on Saturday,” she added. She demanded severe punishment for officers involved.
