The Kozhikode district committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has dismissed the corruption allegations raised by the Kozhikode District Congress Committee (DCC) against its party leaders.
In a release issued on Tuesday (April 22), CPI(M) district secretary M. Mehboob said the remarks by DCC president K. Praveenkumar were an attempt to cover up his party’s weaknesses and divert attention from the factionalism plaguing the organisation. Mr. Praveenkumar had alleged on April 21 that the CPI(M) had turned Kozhikode into a “hub of corruption” in recent years. He cited land deals related to the public sector undertaking SAIL-SCL Ltd. and the Comtrust Weaving Factory to substantiate his claims. The Congress leader had also challenged the CPI(M) to publicise the wealth owned by its leaders.
However, Mr. Mehboob claimed that it was mandatory for all CPI(M) members to declare their assets and liabilities to the party in a transparent manner. He claimed that parties like the Congress could never even imagine implementing such a practice. Mr. Mehboob further alleged that Congress leaders may have amassed wealth by misusing their power during their time in government and should not assume that leaders of other parties would follow similar methods.
Mr. Mehboob alleged that the Congress was trying to divert attention from the embarrassment the party suffered when videos of its leaders jostling for space during the inauguration of the new DCC office went viral in media.
