Cyclone Fengal: Tamil Nadu government announces ₹2,000 as cyclone relief

Families whose livelihood was severely affected by Cyclone Fengal in Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Kallakurichi districts are set to get a relief assistance of ₹2,000.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has also directed the Collectors in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Tiruvannamalai districts to send details of severely affected areas. According to an official release on relief assistance, a solatium of ₹5 lakh will be granted to families of each of the deceased due to the cyclone and related incidents.

A compensation of ₹10,000 will be granted to people whose huts were washed away or damaged in the floods, and those under the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam Scheme will be given priority. As for damage to crops, a compensation of ₹17,000 per hectare has been announced in case of paddy cultivation if the loss is estimated to be more than 33%.

If the loss was more than 33% in case of perennial crops and trees, the compensation would be ₹22,500 per hectare. If the loss was more than 33% in rain-fed crops, the compensation would be ₹8,500 per hectare. For cattle deaths, the compensation would be ₹37,500. In case of sheep, it will be ₹4,000 and ₹100 (per bird) for poultry.

Special camps will be organised to verify certificates, Aadhaar cards, ration cards, and other documents in areas affected by cyclone and heavy rain. Mr. Stalin has ordered the distribution of new textbooks to students whose books have been damaged by the floods. He chaired a meeting with Ministers and senior officials at the Secretariat in Chennai on Tuesday, reviewing the impact of the cyclone and the relief operations under way in various parts of the State.

Landslip deaths

Earlier in the day, Mr. Stalin condoled the death of seven persons in a landslip triggered by torrential rain in Tiruvannamalai. He also announced a solatium of ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased.

Phone call from PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Mr. Stalin over phone to enquire about the impact of Cyclone Fengal. In a social media post, the Chief Minister referred to Mr. Modi’s call and said he requested the Prime Minister to consider the State’s request for relief and extend assistance. He reiterated his request to send a Central team to assess the damage. Mr. Stalin also apprised Mr. Modi of the relief operations under way in the State.

MPs demand

DMK MP T.R. Baalu urged the Centre to send a team to the State to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Fengal.

Raising the matter in the Lok Sabha during the Zero Hour, he said the cyclone had caused heavy damage in 14 districts of the State, including Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Tiruvannamalai, and Chengalpattu. A total of twelve persons had lost their lives, he added.

Elaborating on the extent of the damage caused, Mr. Baalu said 9,576 km of roads had been damaged and 1,847 small bridges had been damaged. “As many as 2,416 huts have been washed away, and 721 houses have been damaged. A total of 963 cattle died,” he said.
