NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is set to meet lieutenant governor VK Saxena at 4:30 pm on Tuesday at the LG Secretariat where he is expected to formally step down as Delhi’s CM.
This follows Kejriwal’s surprise announcement on Sunday to resign, saying, “If the public reelects me, it will serve as a certificate of my honesty.”
He called for early elections in Delhi to be held in November this year, coinciding with the Maharashtra polls, instead of the originally scheduled date in February 2025.
This comes days after Kejriwal was granted bail by the Supreme Court in a corruption case related to the alleged Delhi Excise Policy scam.
The BJP has labeled Kejriwal’s resignation announcement as a “PR stunt,” suggesting that it is an attempt to restore his public image following his recent release from Tihar Jail.
The AAP‘s Political Affairs Committee (PAC) is expected to deliberate on the selection of the next chief ministerial candidate and the composition of the Delhi Cabinet. Additionally, the committee will review strategies for the upcoming Haryana elections, as the party aims to broaden its political presence.
Several ministers, including Atishi, Gopal Rai, Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Kailash Gahlot, along with some reserved category MLAs like Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Assembly Rakhi Birla, are being considered as potential successors to Kejriwal. Interestingly, even Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, is reportedly among the candidates being discussed for the role of chief minister.
