A special court in Delhi on Friday (January 10, 2024) directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to give three days prior written notice to Congress MP from Sivaganga of Tamil Nadu Karti Chidambaram in a fresh corruption case lodged against him.

Mr. Chidambaram is accused of allegedly giving relief to a liquor company over a ban on duty-free sale of its whisky.

Special judge, Kaveri Baweja of the Rouse Avenue Court says the investigating agency, which is CBI in the said case, shall give three days written notice prior to the applicant in case his arrest is required after he joins the investigation of the case upon return to the country on February 1, 2025.

The order was pronounced on an anticipatory bail application filed by the Congress MP who is travelling abroad. The court also ordered Mr. Chidambaram to join the investigation upon his return to India and cooperate in the process, as and when so required in accordance with law.

The CBI, during the hearing of the case, submitted that no notice under Section 35(3) of BNSS has been issued so far to Mr. Chidambaram and that there is no apprehension of his arrest at this stage of the investigation.

In its FIR, the Central agency alleged that the Congress Lok Sabha member has given relief to alcoholic beverage company Diageo Scotland over a ban on the duty-free sale of its whisky. The case pertains to an alleged suspicious payment made to Advantage Strategic Consulting Pvt. Ltd, “an entity controlled” by Karti P. Chidambaram and his close aide S. Bhaskararaman by Diageo Scotland and Sequoia Capitals, the CBI FIR said.
