NEW DELHI: The southwest monsoon is likely to arrive in Delhi in the next two-three days, India Meteorological Department announced on Thursday. And on the day of this announcement, the maximum temperature dipped to 35.4 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal, following light to moderate pre-monsoon showers.
The temperature fell to below normal after 46 days.The last time this happened this season was on May 12, when the maximum high was 38.8 degrees Celsius, one below normal. The maximum temperature stayed above normal continuously from May 13 to June 26.
While the news of the rain-bearing monsoon winds reaching Delhi by the month-end was welcome after a sweltering summer, the city missed the normal onset date for monsoon on Thursday. Delhi is likely to have rain over the next seven days, with the precipitation intensifying after the arrival of monsoon as moderate to heavy rain is expected during the weekend. The Met department has sounded an ‘orange’ alert for Saturday for moderate to heavy rain, while a ‘yellow’ alert has warned of some rain over the next seven days.
“The conditions for further advance of southwest Monsoon into some more parts of Rajasthan are likely to become favourable, parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, some more parts of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chandigarh and some parts of Haryana, some more parts of Punjab, remaining parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu during next 2-3 days,” IMD said in its bulletin on Thursday. In Delhi, light to moderate rain has been predicted for Friday, while moderate to heavy showers are likely on Saturday and Sunday.
Safdarjung, the city’s base weather station, logged 5.2mm of rainfall between 8.30am and 5.30 pm on Thursday. Palam, Lodhi Road, Pitampura and Ridge received, respectively, 17.6mm, 9.6mm, 9mm and 6.2mm of rainfall.
TOI reported on June 25 that Delhi recorded the lowest rainfall in at least 14 years in the March-June period this year. The monsoon rains are expected to provide much-needed respite from hot and dry conditions. The monsoon reached Delhi on June 25 and 30 in 2023 and 2022, respectively.
The maximum temperature on Thursday was 3.6 degrees Celsius lower than Wednesday’s temperature. The minimum temperature was 28.6 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal. The heat index, or feels-like temperature, was 47 degrees Celsius against 52 degrees a day earlier.
The maximum temperature is forecast at 36 degrees Celsius on Friday and Saturday and 33-34 degrees Celsius from Sunday to July 7.
