New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr’s status for the 2025-26 season is unclear because of a shoulder injury. NFL Network has reported that the injury threatens his availability for this season and Carr is weighing options, including the possibility of surgery.

Shedeur Sanders, Aaron Rodgers among top names to replace injured Saints QB Derek Carr

The Saints have limited options for veteran quarterbacks as NFL free agency nears its end and in the upcoming NFL draft, they need to decide whether to spend a high first-round pick on a quarterback. The team recently appointed Kellen Moore as their head coach following his successful tenure as the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, the team that won the Super Bowl this year. Sources suggest that Moore may choose to part ways with 34-year-old Carr, in order to find a future quarterback to build around in New Orleans.

According to sports journalist Dianna Russini, Carr’s injury was not unexpected for the Saints. However, he carries a significant cap hit of $20.4 million for the 2025 season. A good option for the Saints this year is Shedeur Sanders. Deion Sanders’ son has emerged as a big favourite this season and could be their new pocket-passing franchise leader. Fans have also noted that New Orleans officials are more likely to trade up for Sanders.
Signing Aaron Rodgers is obviously an option for the Saints and though Moore is younger than the QB, chances are they could work well together. In fact, according to Mike Florio, the New Orleans Saints are planning to reach out to 41-year-old quarterback after Carr sustained his injury. Reports indicate that Rodgers was considering waiting to see if the Minnesota Vikings would show any interest, but it seems that isn’t materialising.

To be fair, both Pittsburgh and Minnesota have more talented rosters than New Orleans. However, if the Saints aren’t looking for rookie quarterbacks available at No. 9, bringing Rodgers on board in free agency could provide Moore and GM Mickey Loomis with some time to strategize for their future quarterback.
Carson Wentz is another name doing the rounds as Carr’s replacement. He was rumoured to be a potential fit for the Browns, but they ultimately chose to bring back quarterback Joe Flacco. Wentz who played for the Kansas City Chiefs last season has spent some time out of the limelight but the Saints could consider bringing Wentz as a stopgap quarterback.
