As the Ram Mandir inauguration in Ayodhya is highly awaited and the excitement spreads all over, here’s recalling the time, Bollywood made films on Lord Ram. From Ramanand Sagar’s ‘Ramayana’ on Doordarshan to the 1942 film ‘Bharat Milap, there have been many films based on this saga. But did you know Vikram Bhatt‘s grandfather, filmmaker Vijay Bhatt had made three films on Lord Ram?
Infact, Vijay Bhatt’s film, ‘Ramrajya‘ was even seen by Mahatma Gandhi.Film historian Dilip Thakur says, “In those days mythological films had a huge draw at the box office. and this film released in Super at Grant Road as during those times Bombay ended at Bandra and the film two shows were in Hindi and one show was in Marathi and the film ran for over 102 weeks.”
He further revealed, “This is only film that Mahatma Gandhi had ever watched and the title of the film was so significant as he often used to mention the term Ram Rajya during the freedom struggle.”
Thakur also said, “This was Bhatt’s second film on Ram after Bharat Milap which he made in 1942. followed by Rambaan which had Sobhna Samarath and Chandrakant in it. Then again he made Ramayan in 1954 which was the version in which Rama’s children Luv and Kush story in it. He remade his film Ram Rajya which was in colour and had Bina Rai instead of Shobhna Samarth as Sita in it.”
The latest movie based on Ramayana was ‘Adipurush’ starring Prabhas, Kriti Sanon and Saif Ali Khan which got a lot of criticism and flak for its portrayal of the story, dialogues and much more!
