NEW DELHI: Union health minister J P Nadda told Lok Sabha Friday that govt did not find any violation of added sugar content norms in wheat-based baby food sold by Nestle.
An international NGO had claimed that the baby food sold in India had higher than the prescribed sugar content. Nadda said suo motu cognisance was taken by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). “Inspections were conducted on April 29 and 30 at the manufacturing sites. Based on scrutiny of the product, added sugar per serving was found to be in compliance with provisions of the Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020,” Nadda said.
The limits specified for sugar in infant food products in the Regulations is on a par with global standards, namely Codex Alimentarius Commission, which considers the recommendation of the World Health Organisation while setting food standards.
