The super-talented Divyenndu ‘Mirzapur’ Sharma said he is very satisfied with his journey so far. “I would say that I am satisfied to an extent that now filmmakers are giving me different kinds of roles,” he said. “I’m satisfied in the sense that I’m getting to work in different genres of films, different filmmakers, different stories, different characters, like I said. But having said that, I feel it’s just the beginning. I am very, very hungry for good work. I want to collaborate with different kind of filmmakers, different kind of storytelling. I don’t want to just be seen as a typical kind of an actor. I want to be that kind of actor when, if my name Divyenndu is attached to a project, people should know, filmmakers should know there has to be something special in it. So that’s what my definition of satisfied is that every time I come up with something new.”

On his newest film on firefighters Agni, Divyenndu said it was a no brainer to say to the offer. “Saying yes to Agni was, honestly, was very, very easy for me,” said the actor. “When I read the script, it was an actual true page turner. It was beautifully written. The world of firefighters we were seeing for the very first time. It’s a thriller, it’s an investigation, a filmmaker like Rahul Dholakia was directing it, who is a pretty respected name, right from the days of Parzania.”

He added, “Plus, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel was producing it. This was my second project after Mirzapur with Excel. I know and trust their sensibilities a lot when it comes to a project. I was getting to play a cop for the first time and, you know, a Marathi cop. So there was something new for me there as well. I had to play a certain age for this character, which also attracted me towards it. So all in all, I think everything about Agni, it was all yes for me. There was absolutely no doubt in my mind. It was almost a no-brainer for me to say yes to Agni.”

Agni reunited Divyenndu with Pratik Gandhi. He said, “Working with Pratik after Madgaon Express, so actually many people don’t know this, but we shot Agni first and then Madgaon Express happened. So our friendship actually blossomed on the sets of Agni and he’s a great guy. He’s a great actor, you know, a very fine collaborator. We instantly became friends on the set of Agni. There was absolutely nothing which was odd or not welcoming about Pratik. We both had a mutual admiration for each other’s work. So, that really helped us in becoming friends. We come from similar training background, so to say. He also comes from theatre. I come from theatre and film school.”

“So you know, these kind of things, they really helped us to gel in the beginning,” continued Divyenndu. “And, you know, our working methods are very, very similar. Every time we are working on a scene, we try to uplift the scene rather than being in a game of one-upmanship with each other. So that was really, really nice. I firmly believe that, you know, no matter how good you are, the scene or the film is not going to look great if your co-actor fails. So, we both believe that it has to be something which you have to come together and create some magic on screen. So yeah, working with him was an absolute treat, I would say.”

The underrated scene-stealing actor also has words of praise for Agni director Rahul Dholakia. “What I really like about him is that he’s a guy with no baggage,” said the actor. “Even after so many years of experience, making both arthouse films and commercial cinema, mainstream Hindi cinema, he comes with no baggage. He is someone who is on one hand very clear on what he wants, but he’s on the other hand very, very open to suggestions. He’s always interested in knowing what you have in mind for the character. What I really liked in him is that he comes from a school where you don’t want to just underline the emotions too much. It’s the understanding of human emotions and human situations that is important.”

He added, “So, with Rahul Dholakia you don’t need to act too much. He understands that. So it was very, very easy to work with him. He used to give his suggestions and tell me what he wants from the character and we made this character together. So it was a very, very collaborative effort. And I really like, I really like him as a person. You know, his principles in life also is something I really, truly agree with. So a very easy breezy director to work with, you know, which is, which is, which is very rare.”

Agni gave Divyenndu another opportunity to play his character honestly. “My main criteria always is to be very, very honest and truthful when I’m playing a character,” he said. “And I’m very happy that people are loving Agni. They are appreciating the efforts of all of us, not just me, the whole cast and crew, the entire team. So honestly, I’m just very happy that people are talking about firefighters. It was one of the main reasons to be part of this film, because they’ve never ever been represented in any kind of cinema or film in our country.”

Continued Divyenndu, “And I think we have failed as a society somewhere, because it’s not fair on anyone that when you see a department working tirelessly day and night, and people won’t recognize their efforts. So I’m just very happy about this, that, you know, Agni is there to represent firefighters. And I think it was a truly, truly an honour for me to be part of this film.”
