Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s films are known for their striking visuals and detailed set designs. A significant part of that visual appeal comes from the way his films are lit and shot, something cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee recently spoke about in relation to Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022). “In Gangubai Kathiawadi, I tried to artificially light up an entire set—not just for night scenes but for daytime too,” Chatterjee shared. “That meant creating our own version of the sun and building a controlled daylight atmosphere on set.”

He went on to explain the technical setup used to achieve a natural look: “We had to cover the entire set at Mumbai’s Film City with a ceiling to bounce light from. Instead of using a green screen for the sky, we used a white screen—what we call a luma key. It gave a more realistic effect when replaced with the sky in post-production, especially because real skies can often look overexposed on camera.”
Matching Bhansali’s detailed vision requires careful planning and execution, particularly in areas like lighting, which plays a big role in creating the film’s overall atmosphere. In Gangubai Kathiawadi, the lighting helped enhance the period setting and mood of each scene in a subtle yet effective way.
As Bhansali gears up for his next film Love & War, audiences can likely expect a continued focus on visual storytelling, supported by behind-the-scenes work like Chatterjee’s that helps bring each frame to life.
