Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate conducted searches across eight locations in Kolkata on Tuesday in connection with two separate cases. During one of the raids at Haldiram on VIP Road, a businessman threw his cellphones out of the window, reminding investigators about a similar episode with Burwan MLA Jiban Krishna Saha.
The incident came to the notice of officials only after a resident staying next door alerted them. The neighbour saw “something being thrown”. The mobile phones had fallen on the terrace of a nearby building. ED officials rushed to its rooftop and found the two cellphones.
Investigators also reached the Salt Lake IB block residence of Biswajit Das, a businessman close to ration scam accused Shankar Adhya. As they entered the house, officers from Bidhannagar Police came there and wanted to confirm the credentials of the ED officials.
A police officer said they did not have any information about the raid. An ED official came out of Das’ residence and said that an email was sent to Bidhannagar Police in the morning.
Das, a director of AD Forex Pvt Ltd, was close to Adhya, who had allegedly siphoned off money from the ration scam to countries like Bangladesh and Dubai. Das, a director in six companies, was questioned about any probable involvement with Adhya.
ED officials believe a large chunk of the proceeds of crime from the ration scam was siphoned off through foreign exchange traders.
The agency had earlier told a special PMLA court that Rs 10,000 crore was sent to Dubai and Bangladesh with Adhya’s help.
Das was not at home when ED sleuths reached there. They also looked at two cars parked on the premises and found envelopes sealed in plastic bags. ED officials also raided his flats at Metropolitan, EM Bypass area and offices at Baguiati and Sector V.
ED officials also searched the premises of another businessman at New Alipore.
