Effective crowd management measures initiated in time by the Kozhikode City police helped thousands pay their last respects to late writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair at his residence, ‘Sithara’, on Thursday (December 26).
A dedicated team of 200 police officers offered field-level support for traffic regulations and security arrangements in the city as planned by senior police officers.
Inspector General of Police (North Zone) K. Sethuraman and District Police Chief (Kozhikode City) T. Narayanan were present at the spot to constantly monitor crowd management. Six Assistant Commissioners, along with a separate team of circle inspectors and station house officers, handled major coordination responsibilities. Since entry of vehicles to Kottaram Road was restricted as part of the security arrangements, more people could safely reach ‘Sithara’ on foot.
The gates of several private and government institutions in the area remained open for the police to provide additional parking space for official vehicles. Traffic police officers were deployed at several points on Wayanad and Kannur roads to ensure trouble-free movement of vehicles. People’s representatives and leaders of various socio-cultural and political organisations also lent a hand to the police to avoid incidents of overcrowding and reckless parking.
“Though several celebrities and public figures were present at the spot, there were no interruptions for the public to pay their last respects to their beloved writer. Several people’s representatives were found playing the role of volunteers to manage the crowd,” said a senior traffic police officer who had been on duty near M.T.’s house since Wednesday night.
