VIJAYAWADA: EC has filed cases against officials who resorted to violation of rules in registration and deletion of voters on the Andhra Pradesh electoral rolls. EC filed 70 FIRs with regard to the complaints related to bulk filing of forms for deletion of eligible voters in certain constituencies.
District and field officials of the poll body found that false applications on Form-7 were filed against eligible voters, requesting to have their names deleted from the electoral rolls during verification. Subsequently, the officials conducted an inquiry against the individuals and booked them under the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
While Election Commission registered 23 cases in Kakinada assembly constituency, it filed 16 cases in Purchur in Bapatla district.
Y Sambasiva Rao, TDP MLA, had appealed in the Andhra Pradesh HC about inaction by EC in acting against fradulent deletion of names of his party sympathizers from the state electoral rolls. EC then swung into action, directing the district collector and SP to take action against all officials who were lenient in handling such applications.
