12 years ago, the versatile actor Adil Hussain became a recognizable face when he starred as Sridevi’s husband in English Vinglish (2012). Now, he’ll share screen space with the late actress’ daughter Janhvi Kapoor in Ulajh. The actor was in a great mood as he talked about this aspect and a lot more during an exclusive interaction with Bollywood Hungama.
EXCLUSIVE: Adil Hussain talks about working with Janhvi Kapoor in Ulajh 12 years after working with her mother Sridevi: “I am sure Janhvi must have hated me in English Vinglish. She must have thought, ‘This moron of a husband of my mother’…”
Adil Hussain is known to be very selective. When asked what made him sign Ulajh, he said, “It is always the story that takes precedence over the other choices that I make. I loved the story. I can’t talk much about it but as it’s rightly portrayed in the media, it is an edge-of-the-seat thriller. The world of espionage is very interesting. Long back I met someone – my friend’s father – and I later realized that he worked for the RAW. Whenever anybody would ask him what he does, he’d reply, ‘I do some business’! That’s when I realized how thrilling it must be for the people who do such work. Hence, when you read actual accounts by people who were a part of these services, you realize how complex their world is. There’s no good or bad about it. Everyone’s working in the interest of their own countries and they are patriots. We might paint someone as a villain but for the other side, they are heroes. Hence, it’s a very interesting space in which the film is placed.”
Adil Hussain continued, “Also, director Sudhanshu Saria has become a friend. I was supposed to work in his previous film but it didn’t work out due to dates and other reasons. He has a deep, analytical mind; he shreds things into pieces and neatly shows the nuances of the situation and relationship between characters. Personally, I found it very fascinating.”
Adil Hussain worked with Sridevi in the much-loved film English Vinglish (2012) and now he shares screen space with her daughter Janhvi Kapoor in Ulajh. Adil remarked, “I met Janhvi for the first time when she was 12 or 13 years old on the sets of English Vinglish (2012). She used to accompany her mother. I played the on-screen husband of her mother and now I am essaying a close relative in this film. It is like a full circle for me (smiles).”
For most parts of English Vinglish, he played the not-so-ideal-husband to Sridevi’s character. How did Janhvi react to it? Adil Hussain revealed, “I have no memory of it. I am sure she must have hated me. She must have thought, ‘This moron of a husband of my mother’ (laughs)! Anybody who has got some dignity would hate me in that film.”
