Veteran actress Anita Kanwal is currently playing the character of Gayatri Raisinghani in the show Raisinghani vs Raisinghani. Playing the high-society Sindhi mom in the show has grabbed a lot of attention. In an exclusive conversation with ETimes TV, Anita shared:
I chose to quit TV after Saas-Bahu dramas came in
We started with shows like Banegi Apni Baat, Tara and all.In a way, the Art Cinema migrated to TV where there were relatable characters and realistic acting. Then came the saas bahu drama which changed the whole dynamics of acting. When you are shocked in a scene and they would say hold your expression and the camera would zoom in-zoom out for a few shots. It was so ridiculous that as an actor you do what is to be done but then it became unbearable and I just quit. I realised that I could not change anything so I chose to exit. I always voiced my opinions, TV is such a big mouthpiece to bring about a change in society but we are using it to take society back to sati, child marriages and glamourise and glorify them.
I did a few TV shows which were comedies and in different genres
I felt very strongly about that, about 7 years back I did a few shows which were comedy and different genres. I enjoyed doing it but then I realised I didn’t want to be a part of TV. I did a few web shows then but nothing was giving me that satisfaction. When this role came about I knew that I was going to enjoy playing Gayatri Raisinghani. Also being a part of a show that is so natural, because things that happen in families are on screen.
Gayatri and Anushka’s relationship is the crux of the family
For me, my relationship with Anushka is the crux of the family’s relationship dynamics. Gayatri’s problem is that ek myaan mein do talwarein nahi reh sakti. She has ruled and as you can see Dev, Dolly and all are scared of her. So how can another woman come and challenge her decisions? It is not that she dislikes Anushka, she just doesn’t like her Guts. Gayatri cannot handle someone else taking stern decisions, it has always been her so she cannot take Anushka questioning her decisions.

Gayatri has 50 shades of grey
I love to have that glass of whiskey which is actually Appy. What I like about the character is that I don’t have to change my look, I am the way I am and it gives me a sense of comfort. Gayatri is a shade of grey or maybe 50 shades, there are days when she hugs Anushka, and some days she wants to slap her. It is a volatile character and I am volatile in reality too, so it resonates with me.
