As Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 hits theatres and performs well despite competition from Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again, fans were thrilled to see Vidya Balan reprise her iconic role as Manjulika. However, in a recent conversation with Bollywood Hungama, producer Bhushan Kumar revealed that Vidya had initially turned down the opportunity to appear in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, explaining her hesitation and ultimate decision to step back from the second instalment.

Kumar shared that Vidya’s decision was thoughtful and understandable. “She gave me a reason. It wasn’t as if she abruptly refused. The reason she gave was: ‘I am not sure about it.’ She received so much love for her performance and acting in the first film, and it was one of her early films, from when she had just started acting.” Kumar explained that Vidya was hesitant about how the sequel might turn out and worried that if her character wasn’t written as well, it could compromise the first film’s legacy.
“But when the second part was made and became a hit, she saw it and liked it,” Kumar continued. “She even said, ‘I could have done it, but I was afraid that the charm of the first part, the admiration, and the love people have for it, I didn’t want to disturb that. But you didn’t disturb it; you enhanced it.’”
Bhool Bhulaiyaa Becomes a Franchise: Bhushan Kumar’s Vision Inspired by Stree
The original Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007), directed by Priyadarshan and starring Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan, was a notable early entry in the horror-comedy genre. Bhushan Kumar noted that his decision to expand Bhool Bhulaiyaa into a franchise came after seeing the success of Maddock Films’ Stree, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao. Reflecting on the potential of horror-comedy in Bollywood, Kumar said, “We did the music for Stree and saw the impact of the genre, and since Bhool Bhulaiyaa was one of the first in this space, we decided to revive it.”
With Tabu stepping into the role of Manjulika for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, the film performed well, giving Kumar the confidence to continue the franchise and bring Vidya back for the third instalment.
