The re-release of a film greatly benefits the actors and its makers. However, with Sanam Teri Kasam (2016), everyone is at an advantage. Thanks to the film’s incredible box office performance, its songs are back in focus. Palak Muchhal was pleasantly surprised to see the title track, sung by her and Ankit Tiwari, is on number 1 across various platforms. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, the singer with a melodious voice talked about it and a lot more.
EXCLUSIVE: Palak Muchhal to release special Sanam Teri Kasam title track as a “return gift for immense love”; says “Kind of support Salman Khan shows is more than what a family member would offer; Himesh Reshammiya pushed me to sing ‘Jumme Ki Raat’, opened new avenues for me”
When a film re-releases, the songs usually don’t top the charts. So, how do you feel that the title song of Sanam Teri Kasam is trending everywhere?
It feels surreal. For a song (from a re-release) to be on number 1 across platforms is nothing short of magical. I have seen that the title song connects with people in a very special way. Even back then, I remember getting a lot of love for the song but this time, it’s exceptional. The song has formed an emotional connection with people and it continues to grow stronger with time. I am happy that not just the song but the whole album and the film are receiving so much love. I feel it was due (smiles).
What also worked was that it was very well-picturized in the movie…
Director duo Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru are known for their music taste. Whenever they come up with something, music is always the highlight of their project.
Were they present in the music sitting and did they share any input?
Yes, they were present. It’s important for me to understand the character and the story of the film. Every time I record, I insist on knowing the background of the character at least. They gave me the narration and it helped me understand the character as well as the intensity of the situation.
Have you spoken to Himesh Reshammiya after the songs topped the charts again?
Yes, I have. In fact, we have been planning together for some time. I was speaking to him about that project and we discussed Sanam Teri Kasam’s success. Himesh ji gave me my first break. I have sung some amazing songs for him and I am very happy about it. Whenever I sing for him, it’s written on the song that it’s a hit!
Have you ever met Sanam Teri Kasam’s lead actors, Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane?
Yes. In fact, Ankit Tiwari and I had gone to the promotional events with them. I know Harshvardhan and we talked about the success of the song later on. It’s a very special moment for him as well. Mawra, meanwhile, is a wonderful actress. I feel everybody is getting their due credit which they fully deserved.
We heard you are going to come up with an unplugged version of Sanam Teri Kasam’s title song of sorts…
We are creating a special version. It’s like a return gift from the makers for the immense love that the audience has showered upon the film (smiles). It’s going to be a female version. Azeem Dayani is supervising the recreation. He’s known for these amazing recreations. Actually, it’s not even a recreation; it’s like a special version where the soul of the song is going to be kept intact. That’s important as it’s due to that reason that the song is loved so much. We are giving it a new treatment. It’s been 9 years. The melody is timeless but the sound can be a little different and that’s how we have been working on it.
When will the song be out?
We are mostly planning to release it as soon as possible and within a week. The process has already begun.
Sanam Teri Kasam’s success surprised many in the industry. However, outside Mumbai, it was always clear that this film had a cult following. Do you feel that when it comes to films or even songs, there’s a big difference in the tastes of the audience in urban and rural areas?
I completely agree with you. That happens with a lot of songs. There are tracks which I have not added to my concert checklist. But in non-metro areas, people ask for such songs. I get surprised. I am like ‘Oh, do you love this song? I didn’t know’ (laughs)!
Can you give examples of such songs?
There’s a song ‘Baatein Yeh Kabhi Na Tu Bhoolna Koi Tere Khatir Hai Jee Raha’ from Khamoshiyan (2015). It’s one of my favourite songs that I have sung so far. Once, when I created a set list, I didn’t include it as I thought it was not loved as much, at least numbers-wise. It’s a generic parameter to gauge the success of a song. When I travel outside Mumbai, it’s a song that’s always requested by fans!
How has been your bond with Himesh Reshammiya?
He always pushes me out of my boundaries. Even when I sang ‘Jumme Ki Raat’, it opened a different dimension for my singing. I never imagined that I could have sung a song like that or ‘Ice Cream Khaungi Kashmir Jaungi’! He would assure me, “Beta, tu kar legi” (laughs). Thanks to the amount of faith he shows, I started believing in myself more.
Have you seen his film, Badass Ravi Kumar?
Oh yes! As I said, whatever he sings, that song has ‘hit’ written over it. He knows the pulse of the audience and he respects the love that he receives. It also reflects in his work.
You and Salman Khan have a great bond too. Can we expect you to sing for any of his films in the near future?
Even if I am working on a project that is not his and when I need his opinion, he’s always there. He contributes at many levels in my life even today. If I am stuck somewhere and I ask him for a solution, he’ll always intently listen to me and solve my issues. The kind of support he shows me is more than what a family member would offer. So yes, there are projects coming up with him and there are projects that have his silent contribution (smiles).
In June 2024, you hit a milestone as you managed to sponsor 3000 surgeries of children. What’s the update at present?
The number has reached 3473 now (smiles). I feel that it’s an important part of my music as well. A lot of singers sing better and work harder than me. But I get the blessings of those kids and I truly believe that has worked in my favour. It’s a responsibility. I still have more than 400 kids on my waiting list. Sometimes, they are so helpless that they land at my house. It motivates me to work harder and arrange funds for all the surgeries possible. It has also given me a bigger purpose in life.
