In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh said that he was once told by a producer that actors have now become inaccessible because of the coterie of people around them. He compared today’s situation with the one in the 1970s when actors like Amitabh Bachchan ruled the show.
EXCLUSIVE: Taran Adarsh appeals, “I request actors to take decisions based on their own mind, not 15 other minds”
Adarsh said, “Just imagine – Salim-Javed (writer duo Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar) have arrived to narrate a story. Did Amitabh Bachchan ask his manager to listen to the story? He sat with them and listened to films like Zanjeer, Trishul, Don, Sholay and Deewaar. Writer, director and actor used to sit together in those days. I have witnessed this scenario. I am not talking only about Amitabh Bachchan but other actors too. Similarly, when Manoj Kumar came to narrate a story to Dilip Kumar, did the latter make his manager listen to the story?”
Expressing wonder at the change of scenes today, Adarsh said, “Managers and secretaries were there only for dates and to talk about money and other things related to the shooting. Apart from this, they weren’t needed to do anything else. The decision related to the story used to be taken only by the actors in those days. In today’s times, there are managers, agencies, manager’s manager. Just imagine! Kamaal hai!”
Narrating an incident he came across from a producer, Adarsh added, “One producer told me that recently when he was narrating a story to an actor, 15 people were present. One among them said that this story is too ‘Bollywood-ish’. You are working in Bollywood, in Hindi cinema. The actor remained quiet, I don’t know why. Shayad mooh mein dahi jam gayi hogi. So, I would like to request actors to take decisions based on their own mind, not 15 other minds.”
