Renowned film trade analyst Taran Adarsh recently shared his candid views on the broader state of the Hindi film industry in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama. Addressing topics from inflated box office figures to the persistent nepotism debate, Adarsh offered insights into why Bollywood often becomes an “easy target” compared to South Indian cinema.

Taran Adarsh speaks on Bollywood becoming “easy target”
Adarsh reflected on the success of Chhaava, which grossed an impressive Rs 600 crores despite initial skepticism about its reported collections. When asked about the authenticity of box office figures, he acknowledged that some producers may inflate numbers. “Look, as far as I believe, some people—perhaps, I’m not saying every producer—some might inflate figures, I don’t deny that,” he said. However, he pointed out a double standard in the industry: “I’ve noticed that Bollywood is quickly targeted. When similar posters come out in the South, no fingers are pointed, but when it happens here, questions arise about whether it’s accurate or exaggerated.”
Adarsh explained that Bollywood faces scrutiny not only for figures but also for issues like nepotism, which he believes is unfairly highlighted. “Has Bollywood become such an easy target that questions are raised about figures and nepotism? Isn’t there nepotism in the South? It’s there in abundance,” he remarked, questioning the selective criticism.
Nepotism Debate: Talent Over Lineage
The conversation inevitably turned to nepotism, a topic that Adarsh feels is overblown. He argued that talent ultimately triumphs, regardless of industry connections. “I don’t even think it’s bad when people talk about nepotism. If you have the capability, you’ll definitely succeed,” he stated, citing examples like Raj Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, and Alia Bhatt. These stars, he noted, earned the audience’s love through their skills, not just their lineage.
Conversely, Adarsh pointed out that many children of prominent producers and actors have failed to make a mark at the box office. “There are plenty of examples where the sons of big-name artists or producers couldn’t leave an impact,” he said, reinforcing that success depends on merit. He added, “The nepotism debate never ends. If someone is ready to give opportunities and someone is ready to take them, who are we to judge? It’s up to the audience to decide whose films they want to watch.”
Audiences Decide the Winners
Adarsh’s decades of experience have convinced him that audiences are the ultimate arbiters of success. “I’ve seen over many years that if you has talent, your film will definitely pick up. If the audience wants to accept you, they will,” he concluded.
