The Maharashtra government, under the leadership of deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, has launched a special initiative named ‘Ghar Ghar Samvidhan’ (Constitution in Every Home) to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution during the academic year 2024-25. The programme aims to promote constitutional awareness among students in schools, colleges, and educational institutions, educating them on their rights, duties, and the core values enshrined in the Constitution.

The initiative is outlined in a Government Resolution (GR) issued by the state, which emphasises the importance of helping students understand their fundamental rights and responsibilities as citizens. The government believes that this effort will not only enhance their constitutional knowledge but also nurture a deeper sense of social justice, unity, and national pride.

As part of the ‘Ghar Ghar Samvidhan’ scheme, schools and colleges across the state have been instructed to display the Preamble and objectives of the Indian Constitution prominently. These will be placed in visible locations such as school classrooms, corridors, and hostels, ensuring that students can regularly access and reflect on the guiding principles of the nation. Furthermore, the objectives of the Constitution will be included in daily readings in school hostels.

To deepen students’ understanding of the Constitution, the government will organise 60-90-minute lectures in schools. These lectures will cover topics such as the Constitution-making process, its various sections, and the rights and duties of citizens. Teachers will also introduce students to the philosophical foundations of the Constitution, helping them grasp its significance in modern India. In addition, specialised workshops and seminars will be conducted to further highlight the importance of the Constitution.

The GR has called for schools and colleges to display informative posters and banners detailing different sections of the Constitution. It has also encouraged creative methods of engagement, such as street plays to raise awareness. Educational competitions, including essay writing, debates, and elocution contests, focused on constitutional themes will also be held to inspire students to engage with the subject matter actively.

Additionally, the government has mandated that all local self-government meetings start with the reading of the Preamble, a practice that will extend to state assembly sessions, further integrating the Constitution into daily governance and civic activities.

To ensure the smooth and effective execution of the ‘Ghar Ghar Samvidhan’ initiative, a 12-member state-level committee will be formed under the chairmanship of Maharashtra’s chief secretary. At the district level, a seven-member committee led by the district collector will supervise the local rollout of the initiative, ensuring every school and educational institution participates in this landmark celebration.
