The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from West Bengal’s Coochbehar, Nikhil Ranjan Dey, on Friday (December 27, 2024) accused the Trinamool Congress of falsely framing him in an extortion case in which three individuals have been arrested. The three allegedly attempted to extort money from the chairperson of a municipality by falsely claiming to represent Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee.

On Wednesday (December 25) night, police arrested Junedul Haque Chowdhury, Taslim Sheikh and Subhadip Malik — all Hooghly residents — from the MLA hostel on Kid Street in Kolkata. They allegedly tried to extort ₹5 lakh from Ananda Dutta, a Trinamool leader who heads the Kalna Municipality in the State’s Purba Bardhaman district, by showing forged documents.

Police sources said Mr. Dey’s name was allegedly used as a reference to book room number 417 at the MLA hostel from where the suspects were nabbed. However, the BJP MLA accused the Trinamool of conspiring against him and said that he was not involved in booking the room. He said he did not know Imran, the person in whose name the room was allegedly reserved.
