LUCKNOW: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday claimed that the target of doubling the farmers’ income by 2022, set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014, was ‘almost achieved’ in 2018 itself.
Speaking at the inauguration of ‘Kisan Mela’ organised by the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, the CM noted that the task could be achieved as farmers embraced PM Modi’s vision of agricultural diversification.
Listing various schemes such as the Soil Health Card, Prime Minister Crop Insurance, Agricultural Irrigation, and Kisan Samman Nidhi launched by Modi government, Yogi said the task was achieved through robust integration of scientific research and innovation. Insisting that suicide by farmers was one of the most debated issues in parliament during previous governments, Yogi said it was no more the case.

Highlighting the fertile land and abundant water resources in Uttar Pradesh, CM Yogi outlined the state’s pivotal role in agricultural production, contributing over 22% of the country’s food grains despite having only 11% cultivable land. “Both agriculture and farmers are strengthened if they get the support of innovation and technology. At present 89 agricultural science centres and four state agricultural universities are present and the establishment of the fifth one is underway in the state,” said the CM.
Yogi also spoke on government’s proactive role in con necting UP farmers to medicinal farming/horticulture and promoting herbal products.
CM also encouraged collaboration between CIMAP and various institutions related to agriculture, horticulture, and AYUSH within the state to foster a culture of innovation and research, ultimately contributing to the continuous betterment of the agricultural sector in the state.
The CM invited farmers, who came from different states, to visit the newly constructed Ram temple once the Kisan Mela culminates.
