BENGALURU: Acting on the complaint by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) against the Union minister for State and BJP candidate from Bangalore North- Shobha Karandlaje for violation of the model code of conduct (MCC), the District Election Officer of Bengaluru has registered an FIR at the Cottonpet Police station in Bengaluru.
During a BJP protest march in Bengaluru on Tuesday protesting the assault on a trader for reportedly playing bhajans at his shop, Shobha had hit out strongly at the Karnataka Government and took a dig at the law-and-order scenario in the state.Referring to the recent Rameshwaram Café blast incident, Shobha said, “People who come from Tamil Nadu plant bombs here, people coming from Delhi chant Pakistan Zindabad slogans. People coming from Kerala throw acid on women.”
Shobha’s comments drew sharp criticism from various sections of the political circles. Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin was quick to condemn her statement and tweeted, “Both Tamilians and Kannadigas alike will reject this divisive rhetoric of BJP.” He had also urged the state authorities for appropriate legal action against Shobha for causing a threat to peace, harmony and national unity. Close on the heels of Stalin’s remark, DMK’s Organisation Secretary RS Bharathi had filed a complaint with the ECI.
The ECI officials had forwarded the DMK’s complaint to CEO Karnataka on Wednesday seeking ‘appropriate action’. Accordingly, the CEO Karnataka on Thursday tweeted, “As per the ECI direction, DEO Bengaluru has filed an FIR against Shobha Karandlaje, union minister and Member of Parliament under sections 123 (3A), 125 and 123(3) of Representation of People Act at the Cottonpet Police Station in Bengaluru.”
