The house of former chief minister of Karnataka late S. Nijalingappa was handed over to Chitradurga district administration on Monday (December 16, 2024) for converting the same into a monument.
Trustee of S. Nijalingappa Memorial Trust K.E.B. Shanmukhappa handed over the keys of Nijalingappa’s residence at V.P. Extension in Chitradurga to Deputy Commissioner T. Venkatesh and Additional DC B.T. Kumaraswamy.
After taking over the possession, both the officials inspected the condition of the house.

Speaking to presspersons later, Mr. Venkatesh said that as per the government’s direction, the residence was purchased last week and the restoration work would be taken up soon.
“The plan is to complete the civil works and after taking up the matter with the government, further steps on converting the house into a monument will be initiated. The engineers have already been asked to prepare estimates by immediately assessing the condition and take up repair works,” he said.
As per the estimate of the Public Works Department, the house was purchased at a price of ₹4,18,49,016 from Mr. Nijalingappa’s legal heirs. “After the purchase, we still have ₹80 lakh utilising which the civil works will be taken up. In case of further requirement of funds, we will approach the government,” he said.
Mr. Venkatesh said that the photographs, gifts and other articles used by Mr. Nijalingappa would be preserved with the help of archaeological experts and the house would be converted into a monument and museum.
