The Krishnalanka police arrested four persons, including three women, who allegedly duped a bridegroom from Karnataka. Police have launched a hunt for the remaining accused in the case.

According to police, the bridegroom, a native of Andhra Pradesh and settled in Gangavathi, Karnataka, approached a broker named Sridevi. She later introduced the groom and his family to four others — Tayaru, Parvathi, auto driver Appa Rao and Vimala, with a marriage proposal to a bride identified as Pavani alias Yamini.

The gang then arranged a meeting of both the bride and groom’s families in Vijayawada on May 13. The accused then informed the groom and his family that the bride’s family was having financial problems and took ₹3.5 lakh from them. The marriage was held on June 5 atop Indrakeeladri and reception celebrated on June 7 at Gangavathi, the complainant said.

Suspecting something amiss in the bride’s behaviour, the groom’s family questioned her, who finally spilled the truth. The bride said that she was a mother of two children, but the gang had convinced her to act as a bride for few days and promised ₹50,000.

“We registered a case and arrested the accused. A detailed investigation into the case is on. Police are investigating whether the gang has committed any offences earlier,” South Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police D. Paavan Kumar told The Hindu on Monday.

“The gang paid ₹35,000 to the bride, who was deserted by her husband and has been suffering severe financial problems. Another person, who claimed to be the brother of the bride took ₹50,000 from the bridegroom’s family,” an investigation officer said.

The four who have been arrested are Sridevi, Tayaru, Parvathi, and Appa Rao, while Pavani is still under their surveillance, the police informed. Vimala and the person who posed as Pavani’s brother are still missing, they added.
