NEW DELHI: Four individuals from France have been awarded the prestigious Padma Shri this year, making it the highest number of recipients from any foreign country.
The Padma awards are one of the highest civilian honors bestowed by the Indian government to recognise exceptional contributions in various fields. This year’s recipients from France have made significant contributions to the fields of yoga, Ayurveda, Sanskrit studies, and Indology.
Among the honorees from France are Charlotte Chopin, a 100-year-old yoga exponent, and Kiran Vyas, a 79-year-old renowned practitioner of yoga and Ayurveda. The other two recipients are Pierre Sylvain Filliozat, an 87-year-old Sanskrit scholar dedicated to the promotion of Indian culture studies, and Fred Negrit, an Indologist who has played a vital role in creating awareness and appreciation for Indian culture.
The development highlights the strong bond between India and France, according to PTI sources. The announcement of the Padma awards coincided with the arrival of French President Emmanuel Macron in India, who was the chief guest at the Republic Day parade.
