BEHRAMPORE: An 18-year-old class X student was murdered allegedly by his friends following a dispute over a mobile video game that they had been playing at Farakka Barrage quarters. The victim, Papai Das alias Pappu’s partially decomposed body was recovered by police near Nishindra ghat of the feeder canal in Farakka on Monday evening, seven days after he went missing. The cops have detained four of his friends and are interrogating them.
According to preliminary investigations, Papai had refused to provide his game ID and password to his friends, which led to his murder. The accused then tried to destroy evidence by setting his body on fire.
Purnima Das, Papai’s mother, identified her son’s body from tattoos on his left hand and chest. Papai was so addicted to the game that he did not take his pre-board exam this year.
“He had left home on Jan 8 evening, saying he would return soon. When he did not return till 9 pm, we thought he might be with his friends. We waited till midnight and then started looking for him. His friends could not say anything. We tried to call him but his phone was unreachable. Then we informed the police and lodged a missing complaint on Jan 11,” said his mother. She said she had tried to convince him to take his exams and stay away from video games. “But he was adamant and said that he did not wish to study further and skipped the exams. He started working with a local caterer.”
Debabrata Chakraborty, IC, Farakka PS, said, “An argument over a mobile game seems to have led to the murder.”
Psychiatrist Rudra Prasad Chakraborty said, “The victim and his friends were so addicted mobile gaming that they had given up studies. They were so desperate that they went to the extent of murdering a friend. It’s an example of behavioural disorder.”
