NEW DELHI: External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Thursday asked the global community to isolate the countries providing safe havens to terrorists. Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan, Jaishankar said, “Global community must isolate, expose those countries that harbour terrorists, provide safe havens and condone terrorism.”
Taking a strong stance on terrorism.Jaishankar said, “Terrorism, if left unchecked, can become a major threat to regional and global peace. Terrorism in any form or manifestation cannot be justified or condoned.”
In an indirect attack on Pakistan, Jaishankar said, “Cross-border terrorism requires decisive response and terrorism financing and recruitment must be resolutely countered.”
The external affairs minister also mentioned that the summit holds a prominent position in India’s foreign policy. The minister also mentioned that “ongoing conflicts, trust deficits have put significant strain on international relations and economic growth.”
The SCO Summit being held in Astana, Kazakhstan was attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
India, China agree to resolve border issues
Jaishankar also met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Thursday in Kazakhstan where the two agreed to step up talks to resolve issues along their border at the earliest.
Government, in a statement, said the two ministers agreed that “prolongation of the current situation in the border areas is not in the interest of either side.”
The two leaders agreed to enhance meetings between their diplomatic and military officials “to resolve the remaining issues at the earliest,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Following the meeting, Jaishankar on X said, “Met with CPC Politburo member and FM Wang Yi in Astana this morning.Discussed early resolution of remaining issues in border areas. Agreed to redouble efforts through diplomatic and military channels to that end.”
“Respecting the LAC and ensuring peace and tranquillity in the border areas is essential. The three mutuals – mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest – will guide our bilateral ties,” the EAM added.
