Google brings Gemini to teens with new AI tools for education

Google has announced a suite of new AI tools for education, including access to Gemini for teen students using their school accounts. The company aims to prepare students for an AI-driven future while prioritising safety and responsible use.

Gemini for teens: AI-powered learning support

Starting soon, Google will make Gemini available to teen students in over 100 countries, free of charge for educational institutions.The AI assistant will help students with guided learning support, practice materials, real-time feedback, and creative idea generation. Safety measures include content filtering, fact-checking features, and an AI literacy video to promote responsible use.

New tools for educators and classrooms

Google introduced several updates to help educators create engaging learning experiences. These include Google Vids, a new app for easy video creation, and Read Along in Google Classroom, which offers AI-powered reading support with over 800 books. Other features include AI-suggested questions for YouTube assignments and improved grading features in Google Classroom.

Enhancing collaboration, integration, and security

Google Meet can now be accessed directly from popular learning management systems, and new student information system integrations will help set up classes and import data. The company is also adding 17 new Classroom add-ons and introducing an eSignature feature for easy document signing.
Focusing on security and inclusivity, Google announced new chat settings to restrict students from initiating direct messages, improved admin controls for data protection, and a dark theme for the Google Classroom mobile app. Additionally, 51 new handwriting fonts have been added to Google Fonts.
