Minister for Municipal Administration and Water Supply K.N. Nehru on Thursday said the State government will identify a suitable parcel of land and establish a sewage treatment plant (STP) to prevent wastewater from being discharged in a stream flowing through Periyanaickenpalayam town panchayat in Coimbatore district.

The Minister was responding to a calling attention motion moved by Kavundampalayam MLA P.R.G. Arunkumar who sought the State government to prevent mixing of sewage in a stream in Periyanaickenpalayam town panchayat. The Minister said more than 32,000 people live in Periyanaickenpalayam in which there are 10,951 residential buildings, 1,029 commercial establishments and 321 industrial buildings.

All houses are equipped with toilet facilities and septic tanks. The commercial establishments, and industrial units in that area have their own sewage treatment mechanisms and no chemical waste, industrial effluents or sludge is directly discharged into streams, he said.

In Periyanaickenpalayam town panchayat, a 50 KLD (kilolitres per day) capacity faecal sludge treatment plant was established at a cost of ₹ Rs. 2.48 crore. Efforts are also being made to identify suitable locations for establishing a STP. However, due to non-availability of suitable land the project was delayed. The State government is even ready to purchase private land located outside of residential localities to establish the STP, he added.
