Patna: The Government Railway Police (GRP) is set to bolster passenger safety and curb crimes on trains with a comprehensive master plan. The initiative comes in response to the growing number of incidents on trains and railway stations, often facilitated by the vast jurisdiction of railway police stations. The plan, proposed by Patna Rail SP Inamul Haq Mengnoo, involves establishment of a new railway police station and five crime control centres at strategic locations. The primary objective of this plan is to ensure a rapid response to incidents and enhance passenger safety, according to officials.Under Patna rail district, police stations like Biharsharif, Gaya, Danapur, Ara, Buxar, and Pataliputra have vast jurisdictions. Several police stations’ areas extend from 45 to 59 km. In such cases, if any incident occurs near a remote station, halt, or bridge, it takes police considerable time to reach there. Criminals have been taking advantage of the delay, they said.Gaya rail police station covers an area of approximately 59 km. Pahadpur, located between Gaya Junction and Dilwa, is the sensitive part of this area, where police take time to reach. The distance from Gaya to Pahadpur is approximately 27 to 32 km with several halts in between. For this reason, a proposal was sent to open a new rail police station in Pahadpur, so that incidents can be controlled immediately and passenger safety can be ensured. The Rail SP’s proposal recommends establishing rail crime control centres at Harnaut, Sadisopur, Bihiya, Dumraon, and Digha Bridge. Harnaut falls under Biharsharif rail police station area, where police face delays in reaching nearby incidents, while Sadisopur was selected considering the long area extending up to Koelwar in Danapur rail police station area. Ara rail police station’s area is about 50 km long; hence Bihiya was considered a strategic location to set up a new centre.Dumraon is an important halt in Buxar rail police station’s 45-km-long jurisdiction. Despite less distance from Pataliputra rail police station, a crime control centre is necessary considering the bridge and surrounding area’s sensitivity, they added.
