Chhath Puja, one of the most sacred festivals in Northern India, is religiously carried out with much fervour and devotion. Considered an ancient Vedic festival, it celebrates the life-giving excellence of the Sun God, Surya, and his sister Shashthi Devi, better known as Chhathi Maiya in the region. It also marks the devotees’ gratitude to the gods who bestow precious life on Earth. Above all, Chhath Puja is a journey to the spiritual world reinforcing purity, dedication, and discipline.
It is mainly celebrated in the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and the neighbouring country, Nepal. The devotees participate in rigorous rituals that involve fasting and holy bathing, along with worshipping the setting and the rising sun. This whole ritual is followed strictly on four days, and all of them have different meanings and practices.
On the first day, which is called ‘Nahay Khay’, devotees bathe in a river or any other water body and cleanse themselves and their surroundings. They then prepare a traditional meal, which is shared among family members. On the second day, known as ‘Kharna’, people fast from sunrise to sunset and break it only after offering food to the deities and distributing it as prasad.
The third day is the most important and is called Sandhya Arghya. On this day, the devotees gather at the banks of rivers or any water body for prayers and offer Arghya, that is offering water to the sun before it sets at the horizon. The sight of thousands of devotees standing in water, carrying lamps, and performing rituals is marvellous and depicts the communal spirit and devotion behind Chhath Puja.
On the final day of Usha Arghya, the rising sun is prayed to. Devotees assemble once again early in the morning at the banks of the river, complete all rituals, and get ready to pray for a blessed family and a prosperous time in the life of their families. This marks the end when all break their fast, with the sharing of prasad between family, friends, and community members.
