NEW DELHI: Actor-turned-politician K Chiranjeevi sparked headlines on Wednesday after he said that he wants his son, RRR superstar Ram Charan, to have a boy next to “continue the legacy,” while expressing concern that he “might welcome another girl again.”
Speaking at the Brahma Anandam pre-release event, where he was the chief guest, the former Union minister said that, “When I’m at home, it doesn’t feel like I’m surrounded by my granddaughters; it feels like I’m a ladies’ hostel warden, surrounded by ladies all around.”
“I keep wishing and telling Ram Charan, at least this time, to have a boy so that our legacy continues. I’m scared that he might again have a girl, but he has lovely kids,” he added.
Chiranjeevi’s comments about wanting a grandson to “continue the legacy” have stirred mixed reactions on social media.
While some fans defended his remarks as lighthearted banter, others criticised them for reinforcing outdated gender biases.
One user shared the viral video on X, commenting: “Chiranjeevi is scared his son Ram Charan might have another daughter. In 2025, the obsession with a male heir continues. Disappointing, but not surprising.”
” I have a girl and I have heard from 100s of people to give birth to a boy next. It feels horrible when people want us to control things I can’t,” it added.
Chiranjeevi has two daughters, Sreeja Konidela and Sushmita Konidela, and is a grandfather to four granddaughters—Navishka and Nivrati from Sreeja, and Samara and Samhitha from Sushmita.
His son, Ram Charan, and daughter-in-law, Upasana, welcomed their baby girl, Klin Kaara, on June 20, 2023.
