Heavy rain continued to lash Kannur and Kasaragod districts of Kerala on Monday (June 16, 2025), prompting authorities to declare holidays for all educational institutions, including colleges, professional institutions, Kendriya Vidyalayas, tuition centres, madrasas, anganwadis, and special classes.

The move followed a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which forecast extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm within 24 hours.

Intermittent showers continued across Manjeswaram, Kasaragod, Hosdurg, and Vellarikundu taluks of Kasaragod. The district administration has opened a relief camp at Paramba Government L.P. School in Maloth village, Vellarikundu, where 37 people from 10 families have been sheltered. The camp houses 18 men, 19 women, including two pregnant women, six elderly persons, and two children. No casualties or serious incidents have been reported so far.

Authorities remain on high alert as water levels at the Manjeswaram, Puthige, Madhur, and Uppala river gauge stations crossed danger marks on Monday morning.

In Kannur, heavy rains in the catchment areas led to the opening of 13 of the 16 shutters of the Pazhassi barrage after the region received 152.20 mm of rainfall by 7 a.m. Rising water levels submerged the Venayikadavu bridge in Payyavoor and inundated paddy fields at Chengalai Podikalam. In Kadavathur, floodwaters breached the banks of the Maheriver and entered the town.

The district administrations have urged residents living in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant as rainfall is expected to continue.
