1. B.S. Yediyurappa appeals to BJP leaders to work together to expose failures of Congress government
Former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa urged his colleagues in the BJP to unite to expose the shortcomings of the Congress government in Karnataka. Referring to infighting within the BJP in Karnataka, Mr. Yediyurappa said, “We can achieve something only when all of us go together.” Mr. Yediyurappa said fighting against each other would not benefit either group.
Reacting to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s comments on the findings of the Enforcement Directorate in the alleged MUDA scam, Mr. Yediyurappa said the CM must be reacting out of worry over the ED’s findings. Being the CM, he should be respectful of the ED, and commenting on its investigation would not be suitable for his position.
2. After rain, potholes resurface yet again affecting Bengaluru traffic
With Bengaluru receiving rains over the last few days, the condition of roads has gone from bad to worse, making it hard for motorists to commute. In September 2024, Bengaluru Development Minister D. K. Shivakumar set a 15-day deadline to fill all potholes and the civic body claimed to fill all of them. However, October rains led to many potholes resurfacing.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has been struggling to complete the work due to “unconducive weather conditions” since then. According to data, of the 9,796 potholes identified based on the complaints filed on the dedicated app to report potholes, 5,828 have been filled. As on December 4, 2024, 729 new potholes were reported and fresh work orders were issued to fill 519.
3. Bescom proposes tariff hike of 67 paise per unit for 2025-26
With demand surging in Bengaluru and in the agriculture sector, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company has proposed a tariff hike of 67 paise per unit for FY 2025-26 in its first Multi-Year Tariff application filed before the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC).
The power utility has also proposed a steep tariff hike of 75 paise per unit for 2026-27 and 91 paise hike for 2027-28. According to sources in Bescom, the tariff hike has been proposed based on the projected surge in demand in the upcoming years.
4. Praveen Nettaru murder case: NIA conducts searches at 16 locations across Karnataka
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on December 5, 2024, conducted searches at 16 locations in Karnataka in connection with its probe into the murder case of BJP activist Praveen Nettaru, officials said.
Nettaru, a BJP Yuva Morcha district executive committee member, was hacked to death by two motorcycle-borne assailants in Bellare village of Dakshina Kannada district, allegedly by members of banned Popular Front of India in July 2022. The NIA had taken over the investigation from the local police on August 4, 2022 and in January 2023, filed a charge sheet against 21 accused.
5. IndiGo to launch Bengaluru-Ayodhya direct flights from December 31
IndiGo will launch daily direct flights connecting Bengaluru and Ayodhya effective December 31, 2024. The airline said that with flights at convenient timing, this new connection enables significant opportunities for increased tourism and pilgrimage.
Flight 6E 934 will depart Bengaluru at 11.40 am and arrive in Ayodhya at 2.25 pm. From Ayodhya, 6E 926 the flight will depart at 2.55 pm and arrive at Bengaluru at 5.30 pm.
