Veteran actor Himani Shivpuri recently opened up about why she hasn’t appeared in a Dharma Productions movie since Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (K3G). In a candid interview with Siddharth Kannan, the actor shared that a light-hearted comment during the shoot of K3G might have unintentionally offended filmmaker Karan Johar.

Himani Shivpuri believes her comment during Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham “may have offended” Karan Johar: “That’s where the chapter ended. I do feel bad”

Himani Shivpuri’s Experience on Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

Himani Shivpuri, who played a supporting yet memorable role in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, recalled that her journey with Dharma Productions started with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, another of Karan Johar’s blockbusters. Reflecting on her experience, she mentioned that while she had “lovely roles” in both films, things took an unexpected turn after K3G.

During the final day of shooting for K3G, Karan Johar approached her and said, “Lovely working with you Himani ji, you are my lucky mascot!” Shivpuri responded by saying, “Please, from next time, give me a good role.” Karan Johar assured her, “Yes Himani ji, I will.”

Missed Opportunities in Dharma Productions

Himani Shivpuri recounted a screening event where she met filmmaker Nikkhil Advani, who informed her that Kal Ho Naa Ho was set to begin filming and that he wanted her to join the cast. The conversation seemed promising, but when her secretary followed up, they were told there was no role available for her. After this, several Dharma Productions films passed without any casting offers for Shivpuri, further puzzling her.

The actor bumped into Karan Johar at an award function and decided to address the issue directly. When she asked why she wasn’t cast in Kal Ho Naa Ho, Johar responded, “No no Himani ji, that role wasn’t good enough for you. Aapke layak role hoga na tab bulayege aapko (If there is something that is good enough for you, we will call you).” Shivpuri then realised that her comment about wanting better roles may have inadvertently caused a rift.

Himani Shivpuri’s Reflections on Her Relationship with Karan Johar

Despite the missed opportunities, Himani Shivpuri expressed that she still holds fond memories of working with Karan Johar. She admitted, “I do feel bad, it used to be a lot of fun. We would gossip a lot and were good pals. Maybe we didn’t meet so often that we could break the ice.” Shivpuri, who played Riffat Bi in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Haldiram’s wife in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, had developed a friendly rapport with the filmmaker during those projects.

Since Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Karan Johar has directed several successful films, including My Name is Khan, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. His next project is reported to be an action film.
